What U-Value Measures

The U-value of a window measures how quickly heat transfers through it from the warmer side to the cooler side. It is expressed in watts per square metre per degree of temperature difference, written as W/m²K. A lower U-value means less heat transfer, which means better insulation.

For context, a single-glazed aluminium window typically has a U-value in the range of 6.0 W/m²K or higher. A standard double glazed aluminium window might achieve around 3.0 to 4.0 W/m²K depending on the gap width and whether a thermal break is included. A quality double glazed uPVC window with argon fill can achieve U-values below 1.5 W/m²K, and triple glazed uPVC windows can reach below 1.0 W/m²K.

  • Frame material: uPVC frames have a much lower thermal conductivity than aluminium, which means the frame contributes less to heat transfer and supports a lower overall U-value. German-engineered Aluplast uPVC profiles with five-chamber construction achieve very low frame U-values.
  • Edge seal: The warm edge spacer between the glass panes and the perimeter seal quality affect the edge U-value, which contributes to the whole-window performance.
